British statesman Alexander Hugh Bruce, 6th Baron Balfour of Burleigh, was born in Kennet, Alloa, central Scotland, on 13 January 1849. He was educated at Loretto School, Musselburgh, and at Eton College, then studied at Oriel College, Oxford. He was a member of the Factory Commission, 1874-1875, and chaired many other commissions too.
